In Summer Quarter 2018, I started a series of three classes to design and produce my senior collection. The first class was the concept class. In it we had a lot of design work to do and we created a lot of mini collections. The first mini-collection had to be inspired by architecture. The funny thing is that the majority of students in the class, myself included, found inspiration from religious buildings. I love architecture so much, and I love finding inspiration in beautiful buildings all over the world. In fact, I took a CAD (computer-aided drafting) class in high school because at the time I wanted to become an architect.

Mood Board

I chose the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi as my inspiration. It’s a gorgeous work of art. I am planning on going there someday. Robert and I have discussed moving to Dubai to live for a few years, so if that actually happens then we will be able to go very easily since Abu Dhabi is about an hour and a half drive south.

I chose the Grand Mosque because of the beautiful geometric and floral patterns found all over the marble and the building itself. One of the things I learned while researching the Mosque is how symbolic everything is, including the way the building is oriented, the designs, and even the colors. I also learned about the modesty standards in Islam. They are similar to my own, although still very different. I design my collections with my modesty standard in mind, mainly so I can wear them myself. I look forward to the day I can go and see the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for myself.

Mini Collection

The first look is a button front dress with half sleeves, contrast waistband and pockets, and a rose print I designed in Illustrator. In order for me to get this dress made I will need to order my print off of Spoonflower, it will be available on Spoonflower soon.

The second look is a button-up blouse with collar and sleeve details paired with a maxi skirt with the same rose print in a gray on gray color. This print will also be available on Spoonflower soon.

The third look is a button-up blouse paired with navy and metallic silver striped straight leg trousers with contrast pockets. I found this fabric and decided it would be perfect to make these pants. I haven’t done it yet, but I really should order some soon before it’s completely out of stock. I also think that a silk charmeuse would be perfect for the blouse.

The fourth look is a mock button front dress with invisible side zip, contrast waistband and pockets with collar and sleeve details. I love the idea of a good shirt dress. I don’t have one yet, but that’s because I’m a clothing snob when I go shopping. I think I’m going to put this dress towards the top of my to-make list.

The fifth look is a knit dress with contrast pockets and a floral scroll print inspired by the gates at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I love this dress! I can’t wait to get the fabric printed so I can make it for myself!

Tell me: What look is your favorite? Why?
