Zion National Park- Riverside and The Narrows

We left for Zion National Park around 2pm, thinking we’d be gone until about 7 or 8pm. Well, we got lost. We had never been there before and had no idea that you’re supposed to park somewhere and take a shuttle up to some of the hiking areas. Instead, we drove right through to a very curvy road with hairpin turns and through the darkest tunnel I’ve ever been in, which takes you all the way to the East Entrance. Once we got through the tunnel, I checked the map and realized we were very far from where we wanted to be. So, we turned around and went back.

We encountered some goats in the middle of the road which held us up a little, but we finally made it to a parking area at shuttle stop 2. We took the shuttle to stop 9 and started our hike to the south end of The Narrows. The Riverside hike is paved, and although it’s covered in dirt, it is an accessible hike for people in wheelchairs, which is awesome.

The Riverside hike ends at the Virgin River, which is where we got in the water to go upstream for awhile. We passed some people coming down stream who had done The Narrows hike in its entirety. They were so grateful to be almost finished, it was fun to see the determination and relief on their faces. We turned around at a bend in the river. We were worried we wouldn’t make it to the last shuttle at 9:15, but we got back to the shuttle stop at 8:30. After our hike we were super hungry so we decided to go to dinner which brings us to George’s Corner.

George’s Corner

After our adventure in The Narrows we went out for some late-night dinner at George’s Corner. It was delicious! The best part was our server who was quite funny and attentive to our needs. I would say he was probably the best waiter I’ve ever had. I was super tired, so I let everyone else in the group hold the conversation. We mentioned to our server that we lived in Las Vegas so he wrote something funny on our take-out container.

Thunder Junction

On our last day in St. George we decided to take Ruby to a park and decided on Thunder Junction because of the $1 train rides they have. Unfortunately the train is non-operational right now due to maintenance, however a sign at the park said it would be up and running again in October. We were sad about the train not running, but the rest of the park is awesome! Directly from The Thunder Junction website, “The Thunder Junction All Abilities park features a dinosaur theme that includes complete wheelchair accessible playground equipment, climbing wall, an “erupting” volcano, splash pad, and a “roaring” C.P. Huntington 1/4-scale train on a 2,700-foot track. The ground is covered with durable soft-surfacing making accessibility easier for those in wheelchairs.” Now, I have never been to a wheelchair accessible playground before, but this one is amazing!

The splash pad they have is by far my favorite one I’ve been to. I think I like it so much because I can walk in the water and be refreshed without getting soaked. There’s a waterfall you can walk under too! The best part is there’s SHADE right next to the splash pad! I have very light skin, and I burn really quickly in the sun. It’s not fun, so shade is a must for me to be happy at a splash pad.

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt

After Thunder Junction we stopped for some frozen yogurt at Menchie’s. We picked it because we had a coupon. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have a mint flavor available, because mint is my favorite ice cream/frozen yogurt flavor. I was disappointed because I struggle with choosing flavors in new places, so instead of my go-to mint with brownies or oreoes and hot fudge I ended up getting the Strawberry and Pineapple Dole Whip sorbet with fresh strawberries. It was tasty, but I would have LOVED me some mint and chocolate. After we ate our treat we noticed some tables with coloring pages and crayons. Ruby wanted to color so we each colored a page, except for Ruby, who colored a bunch of them. Apparently, they have a coloring contest going on, so we put our beautiful colored pages up on the wall to see if by some random chance we’ll win. It was so relaxing to color. I really should get out my coloring books more often.

All-in-all, visiting St. George was so much fun. It’s a great family friendly city. There’s so much to do and, unfortunately, we didn’t get to see or do everything we wanted to, but I think that’s what most places are like when you’re just visiting. When we return we want to eat at the Painted Pony and visit the Wildlife Museum.

Tell me: Have you been to Zion National Park? If so, what was your favorite part? If not, do you want to go and why?
